How Would Grandma Have Done It?

by Tammy Taylor~

How would grandma have done it? I’ve been seeing this question a lot on social media lately.  But it’s great food for thought, especially for those striving to reduce waste and save a little money too.  You see, plastic and single-use items weren’t commonplace back in grandma’s day.  And yet, grandma got around the kitchen just fine without it.

Sometimes the old ways are really the best ways. Let’s see how grandma would have done it.

Did you ever stop and wonder "How would grandma do this?" Oh yeah, grandma was the queen of "Use Whatcha Got"! She got by fine without plastic & disposables. #TaylorMadeHomestead

Reducing Plastic: It’s EASY!

by Tammy Taylor~

Y’all know I hate plastic.  A LOT.  Is our home plastic free?  Oh no, of course not.  Yeah I’ll push back against plastic waste wherever possible but there’s certainly no perfection here at the Taylor Household!  Is it the same for you?

Sometimes the very magnitude of the problem makes you wonder “why bother?”.  Whelp, there are as many reasons as there are points of view.  But here’s why I make the effort in our home.

Reducing Plastic is important in the Taylor household. But the plastic problem seems so big - why bother?? Don't worry, it's easy to be mindful of plastic waste! #TxHomesteader

How To Make Your Own No-Waste Citrus Juice Using Frozen Limes

by Tammy Taylor~

Several weeks ago we were shopping for a family gathering and we needed to pick up some fresh limes. While we were in the grocery store to pick up limes, RancherMan decided that ‘6 for $1’ was the way to go.  I wasn’t sure we’d go through all six limes though.  As it turns out there were indeed limes leftover after our gathering.  To keep them from going to waste I washed them and tossed ’em in the freezer.

Come see how a frozen lime helps me reduce waste in the kitchen.

You could buy a plastic bottle of real lime juice, but why? Come see my easy, zero-waste (and CHEAP) solution for having 100% real lime juice for my recipes. #TaylorMadeHomestead

Food waste – we all hate it.  We work diligently to make sure none of that food we’ve paid our hard-earned money for is wasted.  But are we doing all we can?  Maybe…  But maybe not!  Have you ever thought about eating your compost?

Stay with me now, I’m not suggesting that you root through the compost heap and snack on its contents.  Today I’m talking about food destined for the compost heap.

Homestead Hack: Keep That Broccoli Fresh!

by Tammy Taylor~

My baby sis and her hubby came to spend the weekend with us recently.  RancherMan & I planned to grill out since the weather was nice.  I’d also planned to roast some fresh veggies that I had in the fridge.  As my sis & I were in the kitchen I opened the refrigerator door to fetch the broccoli leftover from our dinner party several days ago.  My sister saw how it was contained and exclaimed “That’s BRILLIANT!”  Come see this Homestead Hack for keeping your broccoli fresh.

Keep broccoli fresh and crisp for several days during its storage in your refrigerator. Check out this simple Homestead Hack! #TxHomesteader

Recipe: Homemade Honey Graham Crackers

by Tammy Taylor~

I recently invited my folks to dinner at our house.  I made cute little individual apple pies baked in canning jars for dessert for them.  But I had 1/2 jar of apple pie filling left and I needed to make sure it got used. Ya know, when that apple pie filling jar starts with the picking of the actual apples, you don’t want to waste any of it!

I decided to use it up making a simple dessert for RancherMan & me.  I’d heat up that apple pie filling, put it on a bed of graham crackers and top it with graham cracker crumbs & whipped cream. Kinda like a quick No-Bake Apple Pie Dessert.  But I didn’t have any graham crackers. So I sat out to find (and of course not follow, lol) a recipe using standard pantry ingredients.

I needed graham crackers for a recipe so I made them myself. I even made them extra honey-flavored! Easy, Inexpensive & Delicious. #TaylorMadeHomestead

Zero-Waste Hygiene: Using A Safety Razor

by Tammy Taylor~

I’ve been on a journey toward zero waste for years.  Will I ever be truly zero waste?  Probably not.  But I know each step I take is just that much more waste diverted.  One place I was bothered mightily was the sheer waste of disposable razors.

Buy – Use – Throw Away – REPEAT…

PLUS not remembering which replacement heads fit the particular brand of disposable razor I’d purchased weeks before meant I was replacing the whole shebangie every time. More plastic, more money, even more waste!

I wanted to try a safety razor but I was nervous.  Aren’t they dangerous?  Maybe I’ll cut myself?  As it turns out, all those fears were unfounded.  A safety razor has been one of the most awesome (and frankly luxurious) zero-waste steps I’d taken so far.

Lady Gillette safety razor. Safety Razors are a zero-waste option! We've been using vintage safety razors for years with nary a cut. Don't be afraid - they take a little getting used to but they're easy to use! #TaylorMadeHomestead

New Year’s Goal: OPT OUT of All That Junk Mail!

by Tammy Taylor~

So a brand new year has begun and there are many resolutions & goals we’re all busy jotting down.  Resolutions & goals making does get a bad rap sometimes, but who doesn’t want their lives to be just a little better than the year before?  I don’t do resolutions since they’re typically so hard to complete.  Read my New Year’s Goals Steps to see what I do instead.  But today I’m focusing on one of the all-year-long goals I have – maybe you do too?

I hate junk mail.  A Lot.  Sure you can typically recycle it, but it’s disheartening how much recycling actually ends up in the landfill even after being sent of to be recycled. Plus it’s a colossal financial waste for those advertising companies as well – I’m never going to buy their goods anyway.  So these days I’m more keenly focused on stopping that junk from hitting my mailbox in the first place.  Thankfully it’s easy.  Come see.
