Throwback Thursday

by Texas Homesteader ~

Working on a ranch means that RancherMan & I are outside day in & day out each & every day working on fences, immunizing calves, mowing the pastures, gardening and more! Since our jobs require us to be outside all day long we take sun protection very seriously.

Sunscreen is touted to be a safe and effective way to protect your skin from the sun but I don’t like the feel of it on my skin, I don’t like the cost of it and since we’d have to use it so often I don’t like the trash that constantly buying sunscreen would create.

(And to be perfectly honest I don’t know how I feel about slathering chemicals on my skin each and every day)

Our family doesn’t use sunscreen. We are careful about what time of day we are out, and if we do have to be out we make sure to take frequent breaks in the shade!

Much needed and good advice! I have red hair and very fair skin! Up here in Montana, although not as hot as Texas, the rays are intensified! Gotta keep covered and protected! 🙂

It seems the sun has intensified to me Delci – maybe it’s just the passing years? But the sun feels extra hot when it hits my skin these days. I’m doing all I can to block it when I’m out & about. ~TxH~

This post reminded me of what my mother would do back when I was a kid. She always wore long-sleeved cotton shirts in the garden and never went out during the heat of the day. It is very interesting because she has never had to wear sunblock. And, surprisingly, she has never had any problem with skin cancer. Your article is a confirmation that it’s not completely necessary to use sunblock if we consider how we live and then make adjustments according to the weather. I pinned and shared this post!!

Exactly Rebekah. We still use sunblock when it makes sense, but I hate the feel of it (and the cost both financially as well as the plastic bottle each sunblock purchase brings) We more often use these steps to avoid sun exposure when possible without resorting to sunblock and it’s worked well for us. ~TxH~

Oopsie! I messed up my letters not UPS but SPF. Not looking for a package, but looking for skin protection. Sorry about that.

I have a family history of skin cancer and I also hate sun block, I do use it when I need to be outside during the middle of the day, but would rather not. Like you I try to work outside early or late whenever possible. I ordered a hat with UPS of 30 and have liked that very much. I tried to order a long sleeve shirt from the same company and the order got messed up and I have not tried to order again, but need to. Maybe I should check the sporting goods store the next time I am in that area. Very good article.

Thanks Cynthia, good for you for taking your health seriously. Although sunblock is a good tool to have, sometimes people just don’t want to use it for one reason or another. But it’s still important to protect your skin from the sun and hopefully this has people thinking about their other options too! ~TxH~
